Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean Sea (in its eastern basin), some 93 km south of the Italian island of Sicily, across the Malta Channel. It is east of Tunisia and north of Libya in Africa. Only the three largest islands of Malta - (Malta), Gozo (Għawdex), and Comino (Kemmuna) - are inhabited. The smaller islands, such as Filfla, Cominotto and the Islands of St. Paul are uninhabited. Numerous bays along the indented coastline of the islands provide good harbors. The landscape is characterised by low hills with terraced fields. The highest point is at Ta' Dmejrek on Malta Island at 253 meters (830 ft) near Dingli. There are no permanent rivers or lakes on Malta, although during periods of heavy rainfall there can be small rivers. However, there are some fresh water channels around the island which run year round. Such places are at Baħrija, l-Intaħleb and San Martin. Running water in Gozo is found at Lunzjata Valley.
Sliema, with its 12,000 inhabitants, is located on the northeastern coast of Malta, in front of Valletta, on the northwestern side of Marsamxett harbor. On the beach there is a 3km long promenade with parks, a small bay and restaurants situated in historical buildings. It’s an idyllic place for those who would like to swim or explore a city with a vivid nightlife. Sliema is also the best destination for the sea, sunbathing and diving. The beach is flat and rocky and is accessible via stairs. The water here is deep. The two main streets of Sliema are The Strand and Tower Road where you have possibilities for the best shopping like on Bisazza Street. Because of the deep water it is ideal for diving and swimming. The ’Lidos’ of Sliema are well-known. Here you will find sunshades, deckchairs, a pool, bar and buffet. Valletta’s two towns comprise Malta’s most elegant holiday resort. The nearness of Valletta, with its lovely historical fort and town, just increases the popularity of Sliema. St. Julian's has the most extensive and most frequented entertainment area in Europe. Plenty of bars, discos and restaurants await guests here.
